Comprehensive sexuality education is essential for young people to be able to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancy, HIV and sexually transmitted infections, to promote values of tolerance, mutual respect and nonviolence in relationships, and to support a safe transition into adulthood.

HIV continues to be a public health challenge for Scotland. Over the last 15 years (2002-2016), a total of 527 reports of HIV infection among 15 – 24 year olds in Scotland have been recorded.
