In 2017 an applicant was refused a Class 1 Medical Certificate as part of the application for a Commercial Pilots License due to their HIV status by the UK Civil Aviation Authority. The applicant contacted HIV Scotland for support. HIV Scotland is the national HIV policy NGO, and recognised as experts on human rights, discrimination and employment cases relating to people living with HIV. The Equality Act 2010, which protects people in the UK with vulnerable characteristics, prohibits discrimination on the basis of someone’s HIV status.
