There are approximately 6,000 people living with HIV in Scotland, yet, despite 30 years into the HIV epidemic and availability of effective treatment, one in eight (13%) are unaware of their positive serostatus. People in Scotland are being diagnosed late, making treatment less effective. There is a need to better understand the barriers to HIV testing with the aim to significantly decrease rates of late diagnoses and overall HIV prevalence in Scotland. We also wanted to better understand how stigma and social deprivation may affect access to HIV testing services.
